Welcome to the Chelmsford Extended Day Summerfest
2010 Program, the HAPPENING PLACE to be! We're excited about our program
in the Center Elementary School - it's air-conditioned, has a great
playground, sports area, computer lab, and lots more!!! With weeks
carefully designed by our professional staff around popular themes
guaranteeing a wide variety of experiences for school-aged children,
your child can fit into the program for the entire summer, just a week
or two, or a special day. Age-appropriate physical, social, intellectual,
and creative activities are planned which allow the children to develop
emotionally and to make choices based on their personal interests.
The goal of Summerfest 2010 is to provide a safe, happy,
and interesting summer for school-aged children from all communities.
The program will be staffed by certified teachers, educational support
personnel, registered nurses, college and high school students - the
majority of whom cared for the children during our Extended Day Program.
Located at the Center Elementary School, Summerfest 2010 will provide recreational
and musical activities, arts and crafts, computers, cookouts, movies, field trips
and always a super surprise or two. Sprinklers will provide refreshing play on
hot days. Some of the scheduled activities are subject to change.
Drinks and snacks will be provided. Pancakes are served
every Tuesday and Thursday
morning before 9:00. Children must bring their own lunch.
Fees are due one week in advance with the first week's
payment required with registration. Thereafter, checks payable to Town
of Chelmsford/CommEd can be
given directly to the Summerfest 2010 staff at the Center School or mailed to
Chelmsford Community Education, 170 Dalton Road, Chelmsford, MA 01824. It is
important for us to know what days/weeks you are registering your child to attend
our program. We are not a "drop-in" program and we hire our staff based
upon the number of enrollees each week. If your child's schedule changes, we
require notification to the Community Education Office at 978-251-5151 by Wednesday
of the preceding week. After that time, you will be responsible for a $10 charge
(per day, per child) for any changes, which include adding or dropping days.
Credit is not given for unused days.
We look forward to working with your child during the
summer. If you have any questions regarding the program, please call
our office.

Welcome Back to Summerfest (June 18) Join us as we
celebrate the end of the school year!
Up, Up and Away! (June 21 - 25) It's a bird, it's a plane... it's
the Summerfest superstars! Our kids will spend the week pretending,
imagining and playing like superheroes! Watch them fly like superman
down our inflatable slide. A special guest magician will impress them
with his magic ability to make things disappear. The kids will be able
to participate in creating their own "superhero." What would
you name him/her... what powers would he/she possess? Murals will be
posted for everyone to view.
Time to Travel (June 28 - July 2) Have you ever thought it sounded
cool to live in the 1950s or 1960s ... or the Ice Age? How about with
the dinosaurs? This week we will spend our time traveling to different
time periods and enjoying the best of each one! We will celebrate the ’50s
with a sock-hop and soda fountain. The ’60s day will be filled
with flower power projects and tie-dying. Our prehistoric journey will
include dinosaur crafts and a scavenger hunt for “fossils.” On
our trip to the Ice Age we will celebrate all things icy - including
snow cones and creating crystals! Our last day will be a journey to
the future…robots and space will be the focus for this “out
of this world” day!
Blast Off to Building (July 6 - 9) Summerfest is proud to introduce
our newest area … our new Lego and Building Room. We have invested
in some fantastic new materials that will allow the kids to spend this
week creating some wonderful handiwork. During this week each group
will have special time allotted to visit this new room and create some
more involved projects. We will also be building some wooden sculptures
using real tools with our art specialist. Burgers and hot dogs will
be served for our lunch on Friday.
Monster Mash (July 12 - 16) Slime time is here … we will be
creating ooblek, goop and homemade playdough this week. Our outdoor
activities will include a “gross-out” relay and some slime
time fun! Indoor activities will include our mummy wrap contest, create
and name your clay creature contest, and a costume party! We will end
the week with our monster mash dance on Thursday and a special movie
on Friday in the gym!
Cruising the Caribbean (July 19 - 23) During the summer grind, we
all need to relax. This week we will take the kids to the tropics.
Art projects will include beading, fish and tropical flowers. The dunk
tank will be here to let the kids splash into summer! We will be snacking
on some summer fruits and having cool slushies. Our games outdoors
will all revolve around having fun in the sun while staying cool. Bathing
suits are required for this watery week! Be prepared to be soaked!!
Amazing Athletes (July 26 - 30) This week we will be focused on encouraging
all children to get more physical. We will be spending the week playing
some of the kids' favorite sports including wiffle ball, volley ball,
basketball and soccer. Kids of all ages and levels will gain more confidence
and have fun while participating this week. Our art projects will include
sports necklaces and creating team banners. Our goal is to have so
much fun this week that the kids will never notice they're getting
some exercise, too! Our second annual parent/child wiffle ball game
will be held on Thursday of this week (weather permitting). The bounce
house will be here to let the kids practice jumping!
Jamming in the Jungle (August 2 - 6) Let’s go green! We will
travel to the tropical canopy to create and learn about some wild animals
that live in the rainforest. Our whole program will work together outside
to create an art piece made from nature. We will have a special visit
from some live animals!
Summerfest has Talent (August 9 - 13) Calling all singers, dancers
and performers. Talent is the theme of this week. We will be focusing
on all forms of talent. Sports challenges, art competitions and performance
opportunities will be offered. Our annual talent show will be held
at the end of the week for all interested participants. Get ready American
Idol ... here we come!
Spirit Week (August 16 - 20) Back by popular demand … spirit
week is here! Teams will be created and they will compete in some silly,
fun-natured competition throughout the week. Backwards day, crazy hair
day and PJ day are always a hit. Art projects will include creating
our team bandanas that the children will wear all week. Make sure not
to miss this week if you are ready to get goofy! Face painting and
spin art will be fun activities offered this week!
Field Trip Finale (August 23 - 27) As the summer comes to an end,
it's time for some fun trips. We will be going on a field trip on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. We'll end this year right with cosmic bowling,
mini golf/ice cream and a trip to the movies. Friends will get to sign
autograph books and say goodbye to great friends until next summer!
